I attended the 2022 Open Championship at St.Andrews Old Course in Fife the 150th.Anniversary tournament on the Wednesday practice day. This Whisky captures the essence of Scottish character felt at this venue, especially with such premises as The Royal And Ancient Clubhouse and The Jigger Inn-the most famous 19th.Hole in golf!
I used to quite often travel through Loch Lomond on journeys to and from Mull Of Kintyre, and used to see the Scottish Open course there designed by Tom Weiskopf.Loch Lomond is one of the bonniest parts of the nation, and it's great character is also felt in your Whisky, thanks again.

Appearance: Dark gold in the glass (coloured?) swirls cling as a thin line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin legs.
Nose: Orchard fruit crumble smothered in vanilla ice-cream: apples, pears and peaches. There's some crumbled digestive biscuit, a little vanilla and some cinnamon spice. a gentle layer of smoke covers everything.
Palate: Thick sweet arrival, a little oily, immediately spicy. Honey, brown sugar, hedgerow berries and a dry peppery spice. The berry notes are quite prominent on the palate for such a short finish in the wine casks, didn't get them at all on the nose. A little time and air offers penny toffees, oak and a hint of lemon peel. The sweetness lingers on the tongue with some peppery spice and a little dry ashy smoky as the liquid disappears.
Finish: Lingering sweetness, dry spice and a hint of ashy smoke.
Overall: A combination of Straight Neck and Swan Neck Pot Still distillates, some peated, matured in re-fill bourbon casks, similar to the core range 12yo, then a partial red wine finish, 20% of the liquid for 3 years and 10% for 6 months, both in Bordeaux Red Wine Barriques - what's not to like? As you can see from the percentages the wine finish has only been done on 30% of the liquid and 10% of that was only for 6 months. A relatively short time but the impact is very noticeable on the palate and finish: berries and a dryness I wouldn't normally associate with Loch Lomond. At £45 this is a great bottle of whisky, I'm on my second - pick one up!

Bought as a present for my fathers 100th Birthday which is coming up in October. He was a very keen golfer and enjoys a malt so will appreciate the ‘Open’ connection as he is still an R & A member.
