Continuous Distillation: Our Single Grain Whisky Process
Our continuous distillation process draws on the same wash that feeds our single malt stills, creating a natural link between our single grain and single malt spirit.
Crucially, we take our spirit off the stills at 85% ABV, rather than the industry-standard 94% ABV. This lower cut retains significantly more character and flavour in the new make spirit, resulting in a richer, more expressive whisky.
A Single Grain Whisky Like No Other
We're the only distillery in Scotland to use 100% malted barley for single grain whisky, and we apply that same exacting standard to our peated single grain, a genuine rarity in Scotch whisky production.
Taking It Off the Still at 85% ABV
Perhaps the most important decision in our process is where we cut the spirit. Most continuous distillation produces spirit at around 94% ABV, a lighter, more neutral result. We take ours off the stills at 85% ABV instead. This lower strength preserves far more congeners and character in the new make spirit, giving our single grain whisky a richness and complexity rarely found in the category.
The Result
The combination of 100% malted barley, shared single malt wash, and a lower ABV cut produces a single grain whisky with genuine depth, character, and provenance, crafted with the same care we bring to our single malts.

The Perfect Introduction to Single Grain

The world's only peated Single Grain Scotch Whisky

100% MALTED BARLEY. NO COMPROMISES.
Most Single Grain Scotch Whisky is made using a mix of cereals. We use 100% malted barley instead, making Loch Lomond the only distillery in Scotland to produce Single Grain Scotch Whisky this way.

The Same Foundation as Our Single Malt
The milled barley is mixed with hot water to extract its natural sugars, creating a sweet liquid known as wort. This is the very same wort that forms the foundation of our award-winning Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

92 Hours of Flavour Development
Our wort ferments for around 92 hours, allowing fruity esters and complex flavours to develop naturally. This extended fermentation helps create the distinctive fruit-forward character found throughout Loch Lomond Whiskies.

A Different Path to Single Grain
Rather than entering our pot stills, the fermented wash flows into our unique copper continuous still. This alternative route creates our distinctive style of Single Grain Scotch Whisky while preserving the character developed during fermentation.

Retaining More Character
Most grain whisky is distilled to around 94% ABV. We collect our spirit at 85% ABV, retaining more natural flavour and character to create a richer, more expressive style of Single Grain.

The spirit is filled into oak casks, where time and wood work together to create the finished whisky.

A Limited Edition Finished in Spanish Oak
Our Single Grain Cooper’s Collection is the second in a series of annual limited releases from our Master Blender, Michael Henry.
Distilled using only 100% malted barley and then matured in American Oak casks with a finishing period in Spanish Oak casks to elevate the natural flavours in our single grain. The result is an elegant single grain whisky with a fruit and floral character, which is then enriched with warming clove spice and creamy vanilla from the Spanish Oak casks.
Questions About Single Grain Whisky
Whether you're discovering Single Grain Scotch Whisky for the first time or exploring what makes Loch Lomond different, you'll find answers to the most common questions below.
What is Single Grain Whisky?
Single Grain Whisky is Scottish whisky that has been matured by one single distillery, using any cereal. Barley, rye, wheat, corn and various other cereals can be used, and can be malted or unmalted.
What is the difference between single malt and single grain whisky?
The main difference between single grain and single malt is that single grain whiskies do not have to be produced from malted barley. In Scotland, to be called a single malt, whisky must be created using barley and water whereas single grain whisky can be made from any cereal such as corn or rye, and they can be malted or unmalted. Additionally, single grain whiskies are generally distilled in continuous stills, otherwise known as Coffey stills. However, single malt whiskies must be distilled in pot stills. Due to these differentiations in the process, single grain whiskies tend to be much lighter and sweeter in flavour.
Why is Loch Lomond Single Grain different?
At Loch Lomond, our Single Grain Scotch Whisky is distilled in a continuous still using 100% malted barley. Unlike most single grain whiskies, which are made using a mix of cereals, we use only malted barley to create a richer, more characterful spirit. The result is a smooth, sweet whisky with exceptional depth, offering notes of crisp green apple, creamy vanilla and soft orchard fruits.
What is Loch Lomond Unpeated Single Grain Whisky
Floral & Sweet - 46% ABV
Loch Lomond Single Grain Whisky is carefully distilled using only the finest malted barley.
Distilled in our continuous still, this single grain has a smooth and sweet character with added complexity not usually found in a single grain. Expect juicy fruit notes, creamy vanilla and lemon zest.
What is Loch Lomond Peated Single Grain Whisky
Floral & Smoky - 46% ABV
Loch Lomond Peated Single Grain Scotch Whisky is made exclusively from heavily peated malted barley in the malt room at the Loch Lomond Distillery. It is then matured in a combination of first and refill bourbon casks which delivers a soft fruity character with creamy vanilla and wisps of smoke.
